Who Owns Majorelle Garden?

Jardin Majorelle, Marrakech's unique botanical and cultural gem, has a long history of ownership. Jacques Majorelle, a French painter who carefully sculpted the landscape in the 1920s and 1930s, originally owned the garden and its accompanying mansion. However, when renowned fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé entered the picture in 1974, the ownership trajectory took a dramatic turn.

Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé made a critical decision in response to the approaching threat of a real estate development project compromising the existence of Jardin Majorelle. They bought the threatened property and also Dar Es Saada, the nearby villa, indicating their dedication to maintaining the artistic and botanical refuge. The dynamic team took on the task of preserving and improving the garden, converting Jacques Majorelle's former workshop into a museum that initially displayed Islamic art until transitioning to a Berber art museum in 2011.

The ownership of Jardin Majorelle by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé protected it from destruction and also increased its cultural value. Following the death of Yves Saint Laurent in 2008, the property was handed over to the Fondation Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent. Today, Jardin Majorelle is a tribute to the harmonious synthesis of artistic expression, floral beauty, and the visionary owners' enduring legacy.
